Yes, it is a symptom of a larger and deeper problem. Much of the middle and lower classes have had an affordability crisis for going on half a century. That is how the rates got so high in the first place. Loosening the rules on credit did help juice the economy and help us recover from the stagflation days, but it papered over the fact that much of the middle class and lower were cut off from the productivity gains in the economy while taking the brunt of the changes that eliminated so many well paying middle management and blue collar jobs.

While in the end it turned out to be predictably misguided, at least Nixon approached things with solid advisors who actually understood how economies operate. With Trump, his approach is more of an awful spasm. Whatever idea gets whispered in his ear last gets implemented as policy. There is no thought and there are several whisperers, each with their own and not even vaguely coordinated and correlated ideas and goals. Most of which are stupidly awful and proven to fail.
