The core difference between an NPU and GPU is a more focused parallel processing vs a more general offering of parallel processing. What this mostly means today is one can't train on an NPU and the models one can run for inference are limited in both structure and algorithm.

I do see this as an important difference especially when it comes to physical AI where training is more of a continuous affair. Over time I suspect NPUs will add limited training features but the real leveler of the playing field between inference and training may well be adequate and powerful communication capabilities (especially wireless).

Would this be the difference in approach you mention as being the rift between Demers and mgt?

I'm never surprised to see someone move on. For those who are most capable it usually does occur with changes in mgt beyond one's position. Have no doubt Demers likely did feel hampered staying with Qualcomm and may also have had a desire to build anew rather than run what he had previously built.

Change is a great enabler and all add fixed baggage over time.

ps Lots of NPU players beyond Qualcomm ... share.google

Qualcomm's AI road map (ie compute-in-memory, SerDes and wireless comms) doesn't seem out of line and with Demers' expertise he likely wasn't going to be as big a contributor as in the past (self energy and otherwise).
