Your comment before was if you think it is a solid business, then hold for more gains. How do you know?

Well, this is analysis of companies and markets and business and the future. We never "know" anything. We use our knowledge and make our best forecast.

My point was more something like if you own GOOG, and it goes up 4x (for example), don't sell it just because it went up 4x. GOOG is (I think) an amazingly well positioned long term growth stock, just own it and (I think) you'll be happy in future years that you didn't sell today.

Taking cost basis out after a 10x gain is a no brainer to me now.

What does the cost basis have to do with anything? If you own $10,000 of the stock today, and you bought it for $1,000 some time ago, is that really a reason to sell $1,000 today? It's either a good stock (don't sell any) or not (sell it all).
