Cost basis is just a rule of thumb for how much to take out or what to work towards if trading around a core position that doesn't soar. It makes the drawdowns less painful knowing you have CASH to buy the declines if large enough to look like great values again.

I have no regrets selling some of my GOOGL early as it gave me cash that I was eventually able to use to get into my ROTH and buy some of the shares back. Same with other stocks that have soared.
