Why Golden Retrievers Often Get Along With Cats

For many dog owners, the idea of their pup forming a close bond with a cat can feel unlikely. But according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), some breeds are simply better suited to feline friendships than others.

Toy breeds and dogs in the Sporting Group—like golden retrievers—are typically sociable, gentle, and open to making new friends, including cats. Meanwhile, terriers, sighthounds, and some herding breeds may be more prone to chasing or annoying cats due to their natural instincts.

Still, the AKC emphasizes that these are only broad tendencies. With careful introductions, good socialization, and basic training cues like “leave it,” most dogs can live peacefully with cats.

Golden retrievers in particular are known for their adaptable, easygoing personalities, which makes bonds like the one between Alice and Kitty far more common than some owners might expect.
