You can stop or limit Windows Updates, but it’s best to do it in a controlled way so your system doesn’t become insecure or unstable. Here are the safest and most common methods, from easiest to strongest:

Option 1 – Pause updates (simple & safe) Good if you just want a break.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Go to Windows Update

  3. Click Pause updates

  4. Choose a date (up to 5 weeks)

Windows will completely stop updates until that date.

Option 2 – Set your connection as “Metered” Windows won’t download most updates automatically.

This blocks most background update downloads.

Important note Blocking updates permanently means:

  • No security patches

A good compromise is to pause or meter updates and manually update when you choose. That way you stay in control without giving up safety.
