Netscape puts Javagator plans on hold www5.zdnet.com

Java fan that I am, I will say that this is a good idea, just like with WordPerfect. Running bloated software on wimpy computers without disks isn't what Java will look good on. There's gotta be some native code somewhere. Predicted solution: Browser server & thin (display) client, (X! or winwhatever if necessary). Sheesh, big programs, big caches, plus overdesigned web pages- it all cries out for a real bloated middleware OS!

This latest move comes on the heels of Netscape's decision to kill plans for its Pure Java version of Communicator, which was due to be released late this year.

This gets confusing. What was the difference?

Javagator was rumored to be a dead project early this year; however, Netscape officials at the January announcement of the company's source-code release plans said it was still an ongoing project.

HotJava, Javagator, and Pure Java Communicator, too many bases trying to be covered here.

Cheers, Dan.
