pennyO, LMDS remains a long way until implementation and is no sure model for profitable data transfer. LMDS will cost LMDS operators many hundreds of millions just to purchase the bandwidth from the Feds, while, the 1580 local broadcasters received their VSB bandwidth for free. Also, the broadcasters will make the bulk of their income from DTV advertising revenue (using private data transmissions as supplemental income)while the LMDS operators need to develop a whole new model. Be interesting to get LOS (line of sight) comparisons on both transmissions. LOS problems practically killed the MMDS companies.
It doesn't matter to ZE what VSB formats are employed by the broadcasters. Zenith gets royalties on all 18 VSB formats, including 720p and 450p and can just as easily manufacture receivers to accept all 18 formats or just a few. However, my read is that CBS, HBO, Turner Group, PBS, among others, will demand that their HD programming be broadcasted and delivered in full 1080i. They see little self-interest in having Microsoft take over their industry, too. In fact, Intel has seen the hand writing and has agreed to support interlaced transmissions in its new PC chips.
Don't be fooled by Dale Cripps, of the HDTV Newsletter. He appears to want to create confusion in the industry with the hope that only his idea of a "Unity" satellite devoted exclusively to HDTV programming will be the only HDTV 1080i game in town.
Seriously doubt that you will get Gannon on CNBC. CEO's only show when they got some big/bullish news to spread, following a press release. |
