We never owned the land. It was still owned by Denmark and they could ask us to leave (like we would). This gives us ownership of these pockets of land and we have sovereignty over this land. This works if they agree Russia and China can not gain access to the other parts of Greenland which is on the table. This way we are not financially responsible for the people of Greenland. So we get the bases. Own the land. We don't need to buy the Greenlanders off with money.

The difference is sovereignty. Currently our military base is at the discretion of Denmark. Going forward we will have additional bases under the full control of the US.

It's not a trivial difference - it's a huge win.
