It is so simple !

The allies thing was a commercial rather than a defense agreement.

WWII was over.

Create a new "enemy.

Cold War started

Thus, the money kept coming.

But that was for a time when the rich countries had economic power.

(I love to be an old man and have lived through all these decades)

As their economic power faded, taxes no longer covered the costs of the scheme.

They started using debt to pay for it.

Debts piled up.

Now the amount of taxes going into servicing those debts requires cuts elsewhere.

The pay master must pull back from the "defense alliance as a scheme to syphon money"

The Europeans thought the US Sugar Daddy would never run out of money,

Like a overspending wife they want the money to keep being spent no matter what.

The US justify cuts saying: We do not have an enemy.

Estonia Kaja Kallas goes: Look the Russian are our enemies.

Keep the money coming! They want to invade us.

The US decides to dump the alliance and go solo in defending their territory.

The whole scheme was: A threat to syphon money from the tax payers.
