| | | “We’ve never needed them," Trump said of our NATO allies. "We have never really asked anything of them. You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that. And they did – they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines."
In reality, the United States invoked Article 5 of the NATO charter after the terror attacks of 9/11 and our allies bravely answered the call, sending their sons and daughters to fight and die beside Americans in Afghanistan. It's utterly reprehensible that Trump, a pampered coward who faked bone spurs to avoid the Vietnam War, would attack the memory of real heroes.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the remarks, calling them "insulting and frankly appalling" but stopped short of demanding an outright apology. He should do so immediately. While Trump will, of course, refuse to apologize because he's a pigheaded sociopath who's incapable of empathy, that doesn't mean we should let this slide. By demanding an apology, we force him to double down on his shameful comments and keep the story in the headlines. |
