This brings up an interesting point, which I didn't cover: the Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) for Macintosh are generally behind their PC counterparts. This is certainly true of the JVMs in Netscape and IE. This may be why it seems like applets work on PCs but not Macs.

You can try tricks like the ones Olivier mentioned. Memory makes a big difference. Oh, and running RAM doubler may not be a good idea for that, because of the way it plays with memory space.

One thing you might try is running Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) instead of a Web browser, if all you want to do is view an applet. MRJ runs Java Developer's Kit 1.1, so it's up to date. MRJ won't render the HTML on the Web page, but it'll find whatever applets are embedded and run those.

MRJ is much faster and more stable than the JVMs in Netscape and IE.
