Hi Pogue:

You made me think about this with your 60,000 miles.

Lets say 6 miles per day, 6 days a week, 50 weeks a year = 1,800 miles / year x 40 years = 72,000.

Are you sure your not closer to 100,000 miles.

I've been running consistently since I was 20 (ran in high school but slacked off in college). My first marathon was Boston in 1978 (I was 23) but you won't find me on the list as I was a bandit (later that year I was official in NYC).

I have clearly missed 6 month stretches over the years (knee, achilles, foot, ankle, all more than once but never surgery, mostly overuse). Sometimes work / family also interfered. So I think I'm at 45 years and while there was a stretch (20+ years) where I used to do 65 miles / week (I did do a 3 week stretch at 90 but my body broke down) I'm only doing 45 miles / week now (and just missed May to September due to an oblique and foot issue).

Maybe if I knew about D-3 and hydroxy 25 I wouldn't have broken down (except the broken ankle and rib's from separate running incidents).
