With respect to UL and Ben&Jerry's, the political independence was part of the brand from the start and part of the acquisition agreement when UL bought them in 2000. I agree that was at times an embarrassment for the parent company, especially since a lot of people are unaware of that aspect of the merger. No longer an issue for UL, since MICC was spun off.
