The problem is that eventually this rationalization mechanism breaks down because they end up having to dismantle everything they hold dear just to hold up said rationalization.

For example, they have to discount the meaning of words. That can't last because they can't live in a society where words have no meaning.

Aggressive defense isn't going to work, either, nor will attacking the source of the contradiction. No matter how much they distract from it, the contradiction will continue to exist as a thorn in their side.

They may end up simply living with the contradiction for the rest of their lives, but with their moral authority severely compromised.

As soon as they learn that "might makes right" is a double-edged sword, they will regret giving up their moral authority in pursuit of short-term power.
