Short answer first, then the nuance:

It’s not radon gas itself that mainly causes cancer — it’s the radon decay products (also called “radon daughters”) attached to airborne particles that do the damage.

Now let’s unpack that cleanly.

1. What actually causes cancer with radon exposure Radon gas alone
  • Radon is a radioactive noble gas

  • You inhale it, but most radon gas is exhaled back out

  • By itself, it’s not very effective at delivering a damaging radiation dose to lung tissue

Radon decay products (the real culprit) When radon decays, it turns into solid radioactive metals:

  • Polonium-218

  • Lead-214

  • Bismuth-214

  • Polonium-214

These:

  • Stick to dust, smoke, aerosols, and fine particles (PM2.5)

  • Get inhaled

  • Deposit in the lungs

  • Emit alpha radiation directly into lung cells
