Apparently they had been paying protection money to one of the local narco gangs. But that gang wanted to fund their fight with another gang so increased their demands to a level that would confiscate about half the values of the metals Vizsla is producing.

They refused, leading to kidnapping and mass murder.

I would not recommend investing in companies that operate in Sinaloa.
