Hi Worswick,

I commend your interest in India and Indian politics. I am from Uttar Pradesh and am not surprised with the NY times article. There's nothing new. Politics in UP and Bihar always had criminal elements. Indian politics does not conform to western traditions of democracy. NY times story is interesting to people here, to Indians it's business as usual.

Indian Presidency is modelled after British Crown and does not have any executive power. The real power lies with the PM and the Parliament.

Indian Union has always been under stress because of the language and cultural disparities, but it does not mean India is going to break up any time soon.

Best wishes,

Jyoti
