How networking is seriously hurting IOM: If I were to name one single factor that is seriously hurting IOM, that would be the widespread use of Ethernet and the internet. Most machines at work are networked these days, eliminating the need for removable storage. I have not used the floppy drive on my machine for years! And as internet penetration increases, and phone and cable modems are built into every computer, one can transfer most reasonable sized files in under 20 minutes, even between home and work. And internet connections are becoming ever faster, gradually relegating removable storage to backup devices. After all, in a network that just zips along, who needs a Zip drive?
