You hit right on something:

It's because of this "everyone screaming at once" scheme that Ethernet, including Fast
Ethernet,
can never achieve its full speed, be it 10Mbps, 100Mbps, or faster. As traffic
increases, the
gaps between packets narrow and collisions increase. A good rule of thumb is that
Ethernet tops
out at about 70 percent of its potential bandwidth, and it can be reduced to a mere
fraction of
its capability if severely overloaded.

The MRVC networking algorithm supposedly eliminates or reduces the collisions problem. I think this is why they are patenting it. In fact, this kind of thing challenges ATM.

So, theoretically, while everyone else's Ethernet runs at 70% rated, MRVCs approaches 100%.
