Albert,

The news also talked of intel and it sounded that IBM wanted both AMD and NSM to be much stronger competitors with Intel. I would say it sounded good for amd and nsm both.

That must be a new policy at IBM. The policy up to now was to offer yesterday's technology, minimum effort and charge a high prices.

If it was really true that IBM wanted Intel's competitors stronger, why did they offer 5X process to Cyrix for M2 last summer, that was 2 generations behind the top process at the IBMs state of the art process in production?

Why do you think IBM is dragging their feet moving M2 to 6S process which is again 2 generations behind their latest - 6X? Think about this. IBM has not yet moved M2 to a process equivalent to Intel's .35u process, that Intel is discontinuing.

Here is a reference to IBM process technology roadmap:

chips.ibm.com

AMD would need the 6X process to keep up with Intel's top of the line chips in performance and Cyrix at least 6S2.

Chances of AMD getting 6X process now? Low. Chances of NSM getting 6S2 are ok, but it would have to be close to production now, which it probably is not.
