3COM doesn't appear to be throwing in the towel.

But at this point, I haven't seen any confirmation that Intel will be incorporating the Modem as part of the chip set.

Intel made modems many years ago - late 80's/early 90s but dropped them quite a while ago. I think it would make more sense for them to work with Analog Devices which is doing pretty good Modem, DSP and ADSL development - as well as other analog "stuff" for the more mundane parts of the PC motherboard.
