Jim, it seems that your post re: Bell South and the 'wireless effect' wherein some 17% of their customers in Louisiana were tossing out wireline to use a cell phone as their primary squawk box didn't get the attention it should.
The other little element that seems to have received only light commentary to date is WLL and specifically the notion that the long distance carriers might use it to circumvent the RBOC's lock on the last mile.
Aren't either one of these--never mind the combination--kind of significant? Dr. Jacobs was evidently making a fairly emphatic point at the shareholders meeting regarding his bullishness on WLL. Come on and fess up all you who used to climb poles for a living: what are the odds that Sprint will ask the Q to throw a WLL around some nice town like Las Vegas (note: not the Congo, not Anarctica, Las Vegas)and thereupon folks will be able to make emergency calls to their moms and dads for more money right from the slot machine using CDMA for the local and long distance part of the call?
Also, you guys can just chime on in and let us know about this fixed wireless stuff--17% of all the boys and girls in Louisiana? Well "strip my gears and call me shiftless" as grand daddy surfer mike used to say, isn't that important news? Particularly given the, shall we say, non-high tech reputation of LA. I mean in Palo Alto I have no doubt that guys will be using satellite phones to call their next door neighbor just cause it's so way techy cool, but Louisiana hopping on board the CDMA train?
As usual, this mission will be ranked and responses graded by the pooh-person--spelling and neatness will account for approximately 99% of your score. Substance will make up the balance. PP
