SAN DIEGO - October 14, 1996 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that it has signed a multi-million dollar license agreement with Kyocera Corporation of Kyoto, Japan. Under terms of the agreement, Kyocera has been granted a worldwide, royalty-bearing license to manufacture and sell Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) subscriber products. Kyocera becomes the 14th Japanese manufacturer to take an IS-95 CDMA license from QUALCOMM.
"Kyocera has been very active in the telecommunications industry with personal handy-phone systems and cellular phones," said Steve Altman, senior vice president and general manager of QUALCOMM's Technology Transfer division. "Our agreement today allows Kyocera to enter the CDMA marketplace with subscriber products for the latest generation digital cellular and personal communications services. By becoming an IS-95 CDMA licensee, Kyocera is enhancing its overall market position, as well as becoming a major source of supply for high-quality CDMA products."

Kyocera Corporation founded DDI Corporation (Daini-Denden), one of Japan's largest telecommunications carriers, and currently holds more than 21 percent of the company. Dr. Kazuo Inamori concurrently serves as chairman of both Kyocera and DDI. Japanese carriers, including DDI and IDO (Nippon Idou Tsushin Corporation), have recently announced their move towards CDMA for next generation wireless networks. CDMA offers a cost effective long-term solution to Japan's
skyrocketing demand for cellular and PCS wireless products and services.
