Often the doom-and-gloomsters are so "far out" in their predictions and so hysterical in their presentations that they can lead the less excitable (more conservative?) person to dismiss the message out of hand, or they can discredit an otherwise worthy position -- much like over-hyping a stock (TTMA).

The above-referenced website (The Asian Crisis Homepage) is more academic in the orientation of its offerings, with the principal being a faculty member at the Sloan School and pointers to other academics at other universities - in addition to government officials, etc. So there is substantial breadth, as well as depth.
