There's is nothing really wrong in general when a company says something is free--- everybody knows that the company gets the money for it somewhere else. But this isn't the normal situation. This is a situation where a small company came up with a product which threatened Microsoft and Microsoft then offered the same product for free to hurt the original company. The Microsoft not only offered the product for free, but it bundled it with its operating system so that everyone would have Microsoft's product and nobody would need to buy the other product, thus denying the small company the money it needs to grow big.

The fact that Netscape may never grow to be very large is good for Microsoft, but it is bad for the consumer. That is why offering things for free may sometimes be bad for the consumer.
