Build Browser-Agnostic Web Sites: Tear Down The Wall zdnet.com

Alternate title: a pox on overdesigned web pages. You guys can have the pictures, I like the words, and all the extra baggage just slows things down.

Just Say No There's a lot you can do to help ensure your Web site is accessible to a wider range of Internet users. Generally, you must commit to creating universally-accessible pages and sites. Specifically, you should:

Learn/confirm what HTML tags and syntax should work ubiquitously;

Use one or more "validators" to check your HTML code and your Web site;

Test your site with all the major browsers and Lynx for text-only, operating systems, connection speeds, and monitor sizes. Even if you don't do all the permutations or test all the time, a few quick tests will teach you a lot.

Remember, you only get one chance to keep your clients' customers coming to their Web sites.

For 90+% of what I look at, Lynx would work fine if everything wasn't so overdesigned. If I could run it from the ISP's direct connected computer, a 28k modem would look faster than a T1 connection. Oh well. Remember "a picture is worth a thousand words" came from a 20th century ad man, and those guys run too much of the world already.

Cheers, Dan.
