Mine Charged With Contravening It's Licence
A Whitehorse Star Archive story originally published February 26, 1998

By Chuck Tobin

BYG Natural Resources Inc. was charged Wednesday with four counts of contravening the
water licence it obtained for its Mount Nansen gold mine.

The company was charged by the federal water resources branch with discharging toxic effluent
last Oct. 16 that did not meet effluent standards set out in its water licence.

It was also charged with failing to fulfill the water licence requirement of filing a report
between last July and this month, according to the charges filed in territorial court.

BYG was also charged with having a concentration of cyanide in its tailings pond higher than
allowed for in its water licence, during the eight months between last May and last month.

The company is also charged with making a false or misleading statement to the Yukon Territory
Water Board last Oct. 17.

A March 25 court date has been set for BYG to enter a plea to the four counts.

Beleaguered by water treatment problems, BYG stopped milling and producing gold late last
year when it was forced to focus on its water problem.
