Why do you think it is recommended so much by the pros? I used to use stop losses a LOT. However, as you point out, I often lost my shares at the low point of the day, never to see the price return to that level, except maybe months later. Now, I prefer covered calls. They limit my downside and they force me to sell at a profit, rather than forcing me to sell at a loss!
BTW, you might be right about buying puts instead of selling covered calls, but almost all my money is in IRA's, so that's all I can do.
Also, since I started just a couple of months ago, I have been very successful with them.
