I just see the nation of India as highly unusual, and lacking much
of the commonality that other nations display.
...
Europe has religion in common to a greater extent than India,
yet no nation there.

And what is the trend you see in what Europe is trying to become ?
Common monitory policy ! Common currency ! No restrictions in
movement of goods and people ! Common standards !
They may not ever call themselves United States of Europe ...but
that is what they are trying to be.

I think India will do fine! The problem does not seem to be that
people hate people with other languages/religions as much as a
system that seems to tolerate and reward the criminals and corrupt
and they have to somehow fix that. More free media to expose
corruption ? More enforcement of laws ? Not sure I have the
answers, but diverse states have always existed and will exist.
Talk to someone in Europe about how many languages/dialects that
even their current day nation really has. You may be surprised !
Only large unwilling empires like British and Soviet have crumbled.

OK, I need to get off the soapbox and back to work. Despite
what I say above, I haven't a clue <ggg> :-)
