Mosby And Verity Team Up To Offer Hybrid Cd/Online Products For Health Science Markets
New Hybrid Technology Enables Users to Simultaneously Access Media-Rich Content With Instant Information Updates and Real-Time Customer Support Online
NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move that will help standardize the way health science information is published, Mosby, the world's leading health science publisher, and Verity Inc , a leading provider of search and retrieval applications for the enterprise and the Internet, announced today that they have signed an agreement to provide users of health science CD-ROMs with an integrated World Wide Web connection. To link to information contained on the CD-ROM and Mosby's site on the World Wide Web, Mosby is embedding Netscape client browser software on each CD-ROM.
The agreement allows Mosby to integrate Verity search engine technology into Mosby's "hybrid" CD/online titles, providing customers with the best of both CD-ROM and online capabilities. Now, Mosby customers will be able to enhance the stand-alone CD-ROM experience with simultaneous online access to information updates and real-time customer support.
"Verity technologies facilitate a multimedia development environment that yields seamless indexing and searching between CD-ROMs and the Internet," said Philippe Courtot, Verity's Chairman and CEO. "We are excited to work with Mosby, one of the first health science publishers to employ the power of both Verity and Netscape technologies in its development strategies."
"This announcement underscores the fact that Netscape client software is a valuable tool for open, cross-platform communications across many diverse industries," said Mike Homer, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Netscape. "The healthcare industry is a strong example of a vertical market that benefits from Netscape Navigator's ability to work with many platforms, including Mosby's hybrid CD-ROMs."
For Mosby, this hybrid combination of CD and online technologies provides the foundation for the growth of its multimedia and online publishing programs. Mosby currently has numerous new titles in development for the medical and nursing markets, which are expected to be available in mid-1997. "This agreement further fulfills our mission to provide information our customers want in the formats they prefer," said Patrick A. Clifford, Mosby's Chairman and CEO. "This is an ideal vehicle for the delivery of healthcare information that is both rich in media content and offers vast reference materials that can be updated frequently."
This technology will benefit consumers of Mosby products by:
* providing customers with Mosby-customized Netscape client software on all CD-ROMs,
* allowing the user to simultaneously search and retrieve information from the CD and the Mosby Web site; and
* offering a personalized search agent that collects information on user- specified topics.
