Big Pharma Report- 2/28/98

Week

Big Pharma recovered from the wedding plans collapse of GLX/SBH to show a small gain (+0.3%) as compared to increases for the record Dow (+1.6%), the record S&P (+1.4%) and the record NAStie (+2.5%). Three of the "Healthy 13" set all-time highs; PFE (91.44, 2/27/98), MRK (130.75, 2/23/98) and JNJ (75.50, 2/27/98). Moreover, Big Pharma set its all-time level on 2/23/98 reaching 82.38.

JNJ (+7.6%) was the big weekly winner on very little news...Mmmmmm. LLY (+6.3%) continued to bounce off its Peabody Valley of 59 1/2 (2/18/97).

Following last week's 4.4% gain, PFE continued to increase (+1.4%) announcing their intention to divest its medical technology group.

GLX (-13.4%) and SBH (-6.6%) took their de-merger hits.

February 1998

After the strong January (+10.7%), Big Pharma (+2.8%) continued to gain but trailed the strong February increases for the Dow (+8.1%) S&P (+7.0%) and the NAStie (+12.8%). JNJ sneaked in to lead the month (+12.6%), followed by MRK (+8.7%), and PFE (+8.3%)

Despite an end of the month recovery, LLY is still slumping (-3.1%), followed by WLA (-2.7%).

YTD 1998

Big Pharma (+13.8%) continues to outpace the surging Dow (+8.1%), the S&P (+8.1%) and the NAStie (+12.8%).

Hard to believe, AMER is leading the sector (+22.5%). The 1997 champ SGP trails by 1/8 of a point (+22.4%), followed by MRK (+20.3%), SBH (+20.3%) and PFE (+18.7%).

LLY (-5.5%) and AMGN -1.8%) are this year's only decliners.

Big Pharma News You Can Use (BigKNY3 Comments)

-Goldman Sachs placed AMER on its priority list. Target price $120. (I would never invest in AMER.)

-Morgan Stanley lowered its rating on both SBH and GLX to neutral from outperform. (Neither company should be proud of how they handled these negotiations.)

-JAMA reports that the number of patient visits for depression nearly double in 1994 as compared to 1985. (Expect an even greater increase in ED visits during the next two years.)
