In my opinion, the only reason that the Businessweek article will have an impact is that BW waited until now to publish such a piece. If one goes back over the last 12-18 months, one can see that countless newspapers and magazines have published similarly critical pieces about MCD. BW waited until after the flood--and after MCD finally started showing signs of life in its stock price--to rehash the same old stuff that everyone else already discussed. Does anyone think that the market hasn't yet discounted this information? Of course it has. Why else would the stock price have gone nowhere for the last two years?

With MCD's inherent advantages, there is simply no reason why MCD can't eventually outperform every other fast food outfit. I don't believe that making tacos or anything else is so difficult that MCD couldn't do so--if MCD management committed itself to the effort. Making a better hamburger (or taco, or hot dog, or chicken) may not be easy, but it certainly isn't as complicated as building a better microprocessor.

The time to have purchased Coca Cola stock was when KO had "lost the cola wars" (as one book claimed in a title that now looks laughable). The time to buy MCD is when it has been deemed to have "lost the burger (or french fry) wars."
