Bob,

I also am somewhat familiar with Arizona politics. Of course, I didn't move there until the mid-80's when I attended college. (Just another Snowbird... :0)

And I remember the Keating affair, and I also remember the state being boycotted because of 'ol Mr. Pick-a-Ninny, Ev Mecham. (My more memorable impression of Ev was that he needed to find a stylish Toupee'.. :0)

Anyhow, I have a great deal of respect for John McCain, but I believe you are correct. He was likely sent to Arizona to win and had big money backing him up from the Republican Party. That crap happens all the time just like dead people finding enough life within to vote for their favorite candidate... <wink>

As for McCain for President, it is a possibility but I don't see him striving to build up party backing for a run at the White House. It seems George Bush is the favorite amongst Republicans here with Forbes gaining some support. But we still have several years to go and anything can change in the line-up.

Whoever runs in 2000, I will express my sincerest prayers for them. With the likely economic trouble we may see resulting from global impacts of the Y2K glitch, it will require strong, forceful, and reassuring leadership to prevent a societal panic.

People think us Y2K "freaks" to be slightly extreme in our pessimism, but given the prevailing state of remediation efforts, societal panic psychology, and severe financial dislocations worldwide, I sincerely hope that we're not underestimating the problem.

Expect the worst and you will seldom be disappointed.

Regards,

Ron
