it depends. would asnd have focused more acutely on not losing ras market to such
companies as coms and csco and would asnd have been focused on producing quality
equipment? the ras market has not shrunk, but is growing, and will continue to grow, just
asnd's portion of the ras market is not growing.

Blankmind,

The ras market profit margins have shrunk considerably. This would be not something Ascend could control. I believe profits would have dropped for Ascend even if they gained market share. Look at the Dell'Oro reports on the ras market.

You could be correct on a focus problem but I suspect management saw the margin squeeze coming and made the decision to acquire.

I believe that Casey Collwell (sp) the ex CEO of the ex USRX saw this problem coming and that is why he approached COMS to sell USRX during the spring of 1997. The perception was he sold USRX for too little. At that time USRX and Ascend were very similar companies except USRX and a good consumer modem market. Note the weak profits in all the companies that only do consumer modems such as ZOOM, BOCA, etc.
