Don't you know shorting is Unamerican :) As for E*trade, while I had an active account there, I was unable to short AMZN. It depends on the broker you deal with ... I've never had a problem getting short shares on AMZN at Datek, but the ideal situation would have been to stick with E*Trade (unable to short) until now :)

One should always be prepared for ridiculous spikes in AMZN price so ideally, small amounts should only be invested. But I'm starting to break that rule and investing a reasonably large % of my portfolio in my short position. Stock prices eventually must trade on some fundamental basis so I'm hoping I can ride out the spikes. Everyone is saying they'd be buying AMZN at $30, but it is amazing how perception changes. With the disk drive stocks, people were euphoric buying at $50 and less than 2 months later, many wouldn't touch the stock at $18 due to uncertainty and price erosions. Books aren't any less of a commodity than disk drives ... in fact they are more of a commodity.
