Jock:

The employment listings are a superb lead indicator. But only of the underlying business. Not nec. of earnings. Still I would like to see the underlying business growing and checking to see if a company is ramping up hiring is as good a way as any.

Actually I think LSI has occasionally had over 200 job listings (most I've seen is around 220 I think). There also is a time lag involved. Another point though one needing finer distinctions is the types of job offered. For instance I now see some DVD related jobs on LSI's site.

On assembling a basket of companies to compare LSI with that's trickier - but VLSI, IBM Microelectronics division, LU's Micro division would be a reasonable basis. A step further you could add the PLD guys ALTR and XLNX. There are actually many smaller companies as well that I don't follow in this field.

(If you keep a long term record two factors you will have to adjust for at least are seasonality and size.)
