Mark,

More good news for Phoenix,

Compare these two press release and you can tell that SystemSoft seems to be following a "me too" sales approach. PTEC has the customers and is licensing the technology. SystemSoft says they are going to "support" the technology. BIG DIFFERENCE!

SANTA CLARA, CALIF (Oct. 15) -Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: PTEC), a leading supplier of standards-based compatibility software for the PC industry, and its PICO Group, a leading supplier of software foundations for information appliance systems, announced today that Seiko Instruments Inc., a leader in the development of hand held information appliances worldwide, has licensed PICO software foundations for use in a design based on the new AMD ElanSC400 microcontroller.
These foundations include software support for BIOS and power control, PCMCIA, FLASH and high speed Infrared connectivity.
The ElanSC400 microcontroller combines AMD's industry-proven CPU core with a comprehensive set of mobile peripherals in a single chip using AMD's Systems in Silicon methodology. The ElanSC400 microcontroller is the only single chip PC/AT compatible microcontroller addressing key concerns of mobile designers including: ultra-low power with integrated power management, and an ultra-small form factor with a single chip design.
The PICO group of Phoenix has collaborated closely with AMD to provide software foundations for Seiko Instruments Inc. in this new design.
"Phoenix Technologies' PICO group has developed a premier set of software technologies that will help us design advanced hand held information appliances that take advantage of the AMD ElanSC400's capabilities," said Satoaki Kato, division manager of Information Systems Division, Seiko Instruments Inc. "We chose PICO because of the high level of quality, service, and innovation of their products."
Designed for the AMD ElanSC400 microcontroller, the PhoenixPICO BIOS and Power Management software occupy a very small memory footprint, while giving OEMs and developers of mobile appliances access to the custom features of the chip.
They include advanced power management, multiple boot sequences and multiple video options. Phoenix PicoCard is PC Card software with patent pending, ROM executable architecture that supports the PCMCIA controller on the ElanSC400 microcontroller. This provides support for hundreds of cards including: FTL FLASH, Miniature FLASH, and compact FLASH cards -- all in a tiny memory footprint.
PhoenixPICO FLASH Array can be used in conjunction with other PICO software foundations to provide disk emulation for on-board FLASH Arrays that support AMD FLASH chips. For wireless connectivity, Phoenix PicoRay provides high speed IrDA 1.1 (an Infrared Data Association standard) compatible support for the built-in fast infrared controller of the AMD ElanSC400.
This complete collection of software foundations -- fine tuned for the ElanSC400, is available worldwide though the PICO group's numerous sales and service centers.
"Phoenix's PICO group is a valued strategic partner for AMD and was a logical choice as a BIOS vendor to support our ElanSC400 microcontroller, " said Mark Morneault, Tools/Fusion program manager for AMD. "The quality of the PICO products and technical support, combined with the market leadership of the PICO Group has proven to be a winning combination for AMD."
Phoenix's PICO Group is active with OEMs worldwide developing mobile information appliances that use the ElanSC400 microcontroller. These platforms will be available beginning in 1997.
Phoenix Technologies Ltd. is the leading supplier of system- level software to PC manufacturers worldwide, and an emerging supplier of Phoenix-brand software to PC users. The company's system-level software products, such as PhoenixBIOS, NoteBIOS, PhoenixPICO, and PhoenixCard Manager, allow PC manufacturers to increase product differentiation, reduce product cycle time to market as well as cut internal engineering costs.
