Does anyone know if IDTI has given any thought to a backup plan for the slot 1 situation if the current socket seven architecture was to die prematurely. AMD because of their recent problems with yield etc., now have alighned themselves with IBM which has been known to drive a hard bargain. The success of socket 7 is important to IDTI to remain competitive in the microprocessor business. The wild card in this whole scenario may be companies like CPQ. There are reports surfacing that Compaq is having trouble meeting vendors requirements for product. A guess would be that they have told AMD to get their house in order. Add the rumor that NSM/cyrix has approached Taiwan semi for a massive order of ten million uP, and the possibly arises that Compaq may be driving AMD and NSM against each other. Compaq has come too far to blow it now. Anyone capable of guaranteeing supply will probably come out the winner. This someone must have a second source of fabrication. If AMD were to lose out the death of socket 7 becomes closer to reality. Frank
