Computer server manufacturers advanced on bullish comments from Merrill
Lynch and Morgan Stanley analysts. Merrill analyst Steven Milunovich said
spending on servers should increase in 1998 as a result of Year 2000 issues,
allaying fears of a slowdown in the second half of the year.

Milunovich upgraded Hewlett-Packard (HWP) to an "accumulate" rating from
"neutral," sending its shares up 2 to 67, saying he expects earnings growth will
accelerate to more than 20 percent in the second half of 1998. Meanwhile,
Morgan Stanley reinitiated coverage of H-P with an "outperform" rating.

Sun Microsystems (SUNW) rose 11/16 to 47 11/16 after Morgan Stanley
restarted coverage with a "strong buy" rating. Morgan said the market has
underestimated the power of Sun's UNIX server platform. The firm also
started IBM (IBM) with a "neutral" rating, pushing that stock down 5/8 to 104
7/8.

Dell (DELL) surged 6 5/8 to 139 7/8, another all-time high, after Lehman
Brothers lifted its price target to $156 from $150 a share.

Deutsche Morgan Grenfell gave a nod to networking issues, starting Cisco
(CSCO), 3Com (COMS), and Bay Networks (BAY) with "buy" ratings. The
move jump-started the stocks, as Cisco gained 1 1/2 to 68, 3Com added 9/16
to 35 3/4 and Bay rose 5/8 to 33 15/16.
