My answer would then be... except for the rising and falling of the river level, which occurs slowly and can be considered negligible over the span of an hour, the net amount of water exiting is zero (or else it wouldn't be a river for very long)... Here is another Microsoft interview question (stolen from the Flame thread) The Beatles are late for a concert. They must cross a bridge to get to the stadium, and it is dark. The bridge will only support 2 people at a time, and they need to use a flashlight to cross (to avoid falling off). They only have one flashlight between them, so they must cross as so... Two go across, one comes back (bringing the flashlight) Two others go across, one comes back (bringing the flashlight) etc. The speed of crossing is limited to the slowest person in the group that is crossing. The individual speeds of the band members are.. Paul - 1 minute John - 2 minutes George - 5 minutes Ringo - 10 minutes The concert starts in 17 minutes, can they make it in time? There is no 'trick' to this problem. It is a simple resource allocation question. Form of the answer should be similar to the following: Paul & Ringo go across (10 minutes) Paul comes back (+1 minute = 11 minutes) Paul & George go across (+5 minutes = 16 minutes) Paul Comes back (+1 minute = 17 minutes) Paul & John go across (+2 minutes = 19 minutes) Obviously, they didn't make the concert with this arrangement...
