There is almost no information value in the pattern. In 1997 they only asked for an increase in auth shares after they announced the split. They announced May 20, 1997 when they released Q1 earnings and had to wait until the increase in shrs was approved, which they did at the July meeting. By going up to 1 b shares they had enough cushion to do next week's split fast. Auth shares have to allow for the exercise of all options and other convertible securities (when and if). Dell would not "casually" ask for an increase to 1.5 b shares because they would know that it would give a message. But at the July meeting they could ask for an increase, say to 1.5 b or even higher, and say it is just to be prepared.
