Teltrend Uses Aware's Dmt Technology In Its Adsl Product Offerings

BEDFORD, Mass., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- AWARE INC and Teltrend today announced an agreement
where Teltrend will license Aware's modem technology for use in its ADSL system products. Under the
agreement Teltrend will use Aware's discrete multitone (DMT) based ADSL modem designs which
incorporate Analog Devices' AD20msp910 chipset. Licensing Aware's ADSL modem technology allows
Teltrend to accelerate the development of its ADSL products.

Jose Enciso, head of broadband engineering at Teltrend states, "We picked Aware for the combination of
Analog Devices chip technology and Aware's systems level experience. This agreement has given
Teltrend the jump start we need to compete effectively in the emerging ADSL modem and system market.
We like Aware's DMT technology approach which provides 4.4 Mbps downstream and 441 kbps
upstream out to 12,000 feet -- faster than competitive offerings, and we believe Analog Devices is
driving the cost of their chipsets down to levels which will allow Teltrend to be a cost and price leader in
this ADSL modem and system market."

"Aware is pleased to be working with Teltrend," Jim Bender, President and CEO of Aware stated.
"Teltrend's extensive experience in the local loop arena puts them in a position to quickly deliver
products that meet the demands for higher network access speeds."

The AD20msp910 chipset from Analog Devices incorporates DMT technology from Aware and is the
result of a cooperative development between the two companies. This DMT chipset is designed to meet
or exceed performance requirements of ANSI standard for ADSL.

This agreement broadens an existing relationship between Teltrend and Aware, whereby Teltrend resells
Aware's ADSL Internet Access modem to telephone companies. Aware and Teltrend also plan to
collaborate on future products and technologies.

ADSL allows the phone companies to easily and cost-effectively offer people the capability of using high
speed data services, such as access to the Internet, telecommuting, and video conferencing over one
standard twisted copper pair telephone line -- without any disruption to normal telephone service on
that line. Data is transmitted at speeds up to 8Mbps to the office or home and up to 768kbps from the
home to the central office.

Teltrend Inc based in suburban Chicago, designs, manufactures and markets a broad range of local loop
provisioning products used by telephone companies to provide voice and data services over the
telephone network. The company's products are sold to the Regional Bell Operating Companies, GTE,
and other telephone companies.

With fiscal 1995 sales of $942 million and sales of $889 million for the first three quarters of fiscal 1996,
Analog Devices Inc is a leading manufacturer of precision high-performance integrated circuits used in
analog and digital signal processing applications. Headquartered in Norwood, Massachusetts, the
company employs approximately 6,900 people worldwide and has manufacturing facilities in
Massachusetts, California, North Carolina, Ireland, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Aware, headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts, is a world leader in "last-mile" technology for
broadband communications and high-speed access to the Internet. The company's products allow users
to maximize use of scarce bandwidth resources for transmitting digitized data. Aware is developing ADSL
chipsets, software, and modems for high speed, interactive broadband network applications. SOURCE
