With respect to readiness in the utility industry read the following.

epriweb.com

It seems to contradict what Cowles says.

Also with respect to competion doesn't this effort by EPRI represent massive competition?

Also we know from this article and previous post by Judge that the oil, gas and chemical industry are already taking a cooperative non-competitive approach to solving the year 2k problem?

Why isn't that major competition?
(Note that Tpro claimed the utility and oil and gas industry represented a 100,000 site opportunity. This major competition in these fields cuts down on the potential significantly.)

And if the year 2k embedded system problem is as serious as most here think, why wouldn't we expect every industry group to take the same co-operative approach.

I know people will say Tpro has a head start.
But the fact is that Tpro has had merely 20 people working on their year 2k r and d for 8 - 12 months max. for a product which is intended to cover a wide range of industries.

I don't think it would be a big deal for a specific industry to devote 200 engineers to the problem if it's that massive and critical to their survival.

That would allow them to catch up in a month or so to Tpro.

And their work would be by people with extensive experience in the particular industry and focused only on issues relevent to the particular industry.

More experience and narrower focus would allow them to catch up even faster and develop a better product.

To repeat why doesn't this represent massive competition?
