I don't know, you would have done just fine if you shorted the Nikkei for the last 10 years. Remember, we are talking about the S&P, not an individual stock.

I don't know exactly how it's done but I know you can short the SPY for any one or all of the 365 days of the year and it will never amount to more than the current dividend yield, which at 1.6% is negligible. I still think I understand your point however.

Japan got well below 1% in the late eighties. Of course we all know what happened to Japan when the bubble burst.
