Class action suits on rise

...In recent weeks, Philip Services Corp., Schneider Corp., Tee-Comm Electronics Inc. and Corel Corp. have been named in one or more investor class actions in Canada or the United States.

....In Canada, securities class actions are rare in part because of differing legal doctrines.

U.S. law generally assumes investors rely on information provided by companies to make investments at any time. Canadian law doesn't accept that assumption except for information provided by companies in a prospectus for an initial offering. That means Canadian investors must prove they relied on a company statement, or alleged mis-statement, when they bought shares on the stock market.
