Ibexx, Re: "My question: has it been clearly specified that this deal would involve the 0.25 micron process?"
Yes, the SJ Mercury News article this past Saturday (posted here a while back, I think Saturday) said that. It also said that IBM would make a limited amount of K6 wafers for AMD starting in the fourth quarter this year, which would do little good for the K6 (Mercury News' opinion and I agree). Went on to say that the K7 would benefit the most from the IBM deal, starting next year, on 0.18 micron line width technology. That sounds plausible (0.18 in 1999. Merced is supposed to come out on 0.18). So, AMD is not getting packaged chips from IBM Vermont, rather, wafers, and in 4Q, not 3Q, and not in much quantity, if you believe the Murky News.
The article also quoted Ashok Kumar, who seems to get more right than the other semi analysts, as saying this was not a good deal for AMD, at least not this year.
The $64,000 question is what in the hay is the K7????? I can give you a pretty good description of Merced, but a K7? Paul, do you know?
