Glenayre Receives $9.6 Million Paging Infrastructure Contract From
China's Shandong Province

BEIJING, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:
GEMS - news) announced today that it signed a $9.6 million contract with
Shandong Provincial Posts and Telecommunications Administration (PTA)
for the expansion of Shandong's high speed paging network.

Representing the second phase of Shandong's new FLEX-based provincial
network, the contract calls for the installation of Glenayre's 280MHz
paging infrastructure in 13 additional cities. Scheduled for completion
in July this year, the network will provide coverage to all 17 cities of
Shandong province, serving a population of 87 million people. The first
four cities, including the provincial capital Jinan, entered commercial
service in late 1997. When complete, Shandong's network will be
incorporated into China's Nationwide High Speed Paging Network, which is
operated by China's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT).

''Shandong is a growth center for China's paging industry,'' said
Chinnee Tong, director of sales for Glenayre's China Operations. ''We
appreciate the PTA's continued confidence in Glenayre's ability to
provide top performing systems for the expansion of their provincial
network.''

Shandong's network relies on Glenayre's industry-leading paging
infrastructure system, which provides all the advanced messaging
features required by the China market. The system includes GL-3000
Wireless Messaging Switches, GL-T8000 series 280 MHz Transmitters,
GL-C2000 Controllers, a GL- N2000 Operations Management Center, and IPNP
networking equipment. Based on Glenayre's WMtp inter-switch protocol,
IPNP (Inter-switch Paging Network Protocol) was developed jointly by
Glenayre and China's MPT as China's nationwide networking standard.

Glenayre's network offers unmatched performance for the new multi-
frequency roaming technology in China, and enables customers to provide
other value-added information services, two-way paging and voice paging
in the future.

According to a new study from The Strategis Group, Asia-Pacific Paging
Markets: 1998, Asia Pacific's paging market will grow from 87 million
subscribers at year-end 1997 to more than 168 million in 2002.
Approximately 50% of Asia Pacific's paging subscribers are in China.
