Don't fool yourself. Vocaltec is farrrrrrrrr from being a standard. Lucent or Microsoft could release a standard tomorrow put it in public domain, and VocalTec would be toast. Early indicators show MSFT has already aligned with a different player and it is likely Lucent is developing their own system. Bell labs has all kinds of compression technology patents and a lot of experience with voice communications. This combined with their current market relationships would hurt VOCLF to say the least.

VocalTec's strengths lie in it's time to market with a viable product. Partnering with Deustch Telecom is a great start but VOCLF will have to give their product away, at least on the client side, to obtain any significant market share to be considered a standard. MSFT has a way of gobbling up the client side of things like this and giving them away for free, just look at Netscape.
