John,
12MB v. 8MB
I think we all understand the merits of the 12MB board today & going forward. No need to get carried away. Remember, this is not the CREAF thread.
Price Difference
I thought CREAF's 12MB board goes for $299 & the 8MB for $199, after a rebate. Is that correct? If so, its a 50% premium over the 8MB's net price for a lot of nothing now, & a little something later. If I'm a gamer, maybe I want to buy an 8MB card now, & when I can truly realize the benefit of 12MB, go out & buy another 8MB, probably for less than $199, maybe $149. So if I wait, let's say, 6 months I pay $50 more & get 4MB more than had I purchased a 12MB card. Just another way of looking at the issue here.
Heat Problem
I'm still of the belief the verdict still out on this one, though I really don't care much. DIMD will sell Voodoo 2 boards; CREAF will sell Voodoo 2 boards. Each has probably stolen a lit bit of the other's thunder. Its business.
My personal position on this whole matter is similar to purchasing a new car model that has just been released to the market. Its best to wait & see how the model performs "on the road" under "real useage" by the customer. If there are any kinks, it'll be correct with next year's model. Its best to learn from someone else's purchase. Fortunately, with computer peripherals, if there are any kinks, we won't have to wait to next year. Of course, I understand, most gamers will not have the patience to wait.
Importance of Voodoo 2
Why is Voodoo 2 much more important to DIMB than CREAF? I don't understand. Explain to me. If anything, I would speculate the reverse to be true. DIMD has established relationships with other graphic chip producers. DIMD has an established reputation in the manufacture of graphic cards. CREAF, on the otherhand, is trying to establish itself as a quality graphic card producer. I would say CREAF, between the two, has a lot more riding on Voodoo 2.
